Week 2 Story: Hot Pursuit

Image
I have added this story to my Portfolio page for the class project. The story is the same, but the Author's note has been changed. If you'd like to see the changes, you can follow this  link. It was a crisp fall night and Officer Jack Rabbit was five hours into his ten-hour shift. No amount of coffee seemed to clear the fog that settled in his brain. POP! POP! POP! Gunshots rang through the air and that’s all it took for Officer Rabbit to spring into action. He quickly rounded the corner and saw a small gold sedan take off. This was his big moment, he thought to himself! He was going to catch the shooter and prove to his partners he wasn’t just a rookie anymore. He lights them up and the vehicle takes off. Officer Rabbit calls on the air for backup and the chase is on! They travel down Lake Hefner Parkway; their speeds increasing to 70mph. Soon Officer Bambi and Sargent Dumbo fall in line as secondary and paralleling units. As they continue South, spee...

Week 2 Reading Anthology

Image
The Jataka I found most intriguing was that of the Rabbit, found here:  The Foolish, Timid Rabbit . This tale was written by Ellen C. Babbitt. The first thing I noticed about all the stories was the formatting of them. Short sentences that weren't in paragraph form. They were single lines in a short story. They conveyed the action or emotion for that particular part in the story. I thought that was an interesting way to write something. I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting for this assignment, but it definitely wasn't an anthology of very short stories. They reminded me of very familiar fables my parents used to tell me. Same concepts but with different characters. I thought it was interesting to see that the same wisdom had been passed along in different cultures. The thing I also liked about this story in particular was the content of the story. The others rang true in one way or another or reminded me to have wisdom in certain areas (like the one about keeping y...

Week 2 Reading Overview/Extra Credit Reading Notes

Image
***** I completed this assignment well past the due date...however, I felt like I should still complete it since it's going to be setting up the rest of the assignments for the semester. I just got a little behind this week trying to figure out a routine and completely missed this assignment. Now to the actual assignment....... I chose the Narayan version of The Ramayana. I know this sounds silly, but the only deciding factor that played a part in why I chose this one is because it came in a paperback option. I REALLY enjoy the feeling of the pages and the smell of a book. I love reading but don't get to do much of it because I have zero free time, so if I have the option to read a "textbook" that looks more like a book, then I'm all about it. I also have a hard time reading things on the computer. I don't think it gives quite the same feel as turning the pages. So that's why I chose this version of the epic. After reviewing the videos and comic bo...

Yes...I Love Technology

Image
I am quite excited about the technology aspect of this course. Although last fall was my first experience with blogging, it's something I'm interested in learning. Not so much for the actual writing content of it, but for the design part of it. After looking at several of the storybooks and blogs for this class, it's clear there are a TON of options to make it uniquely mine. So far, all my MIS courses have not dealt with anything design related. I know it is a growing field. While it's not directly related to management information systems, it does tie in quite a bit. For example, if I create a user interface for a client for a database, I want it to look nice. Most of the platforms used here are not for that purpose, but with all things technology, there are similarities. For me, I don't think the challenge in this class with be using the technology, but rather keeping it all organized. As for the level of technology used for this class, I will say it is more tha...

Assignments

Coffee! Taken 8/24/19 from my phone. This picture seems kind of random, but the post wasn't super specific about what it needed to contain. I decided that I'd take a picture of my most favorite thing in the morning: coffee!!! I have a hard time starting my day without at least one cup. This morning I'm working on my 3rd. It's super early and very quite at work. These weekend mornings are a nice break from the chaos! As I think about this assignment and the questions I'm supposed to answer, I realize this class might be a little more taxing than I had originally anticipated. There are a lot of assignments to keep up with each week. The assignments I'm most excited about are the readings. I enjoy reading and learning new things. The ones I'm most anxious about are the storybooks. Creative writing has never been something I've been good at. I struggle with coming up with abstract concepts and then expanding on them to make them interesting. Tha...

Growth Mindset

Image
Before this assignment, I had never heard of Carol Dweck. However, after looking up growth mindset, it is apparent she is well versed in this subject and has an abundant amount of information available on the world wide web. If I'm being completely honest, I think I side more with the fixed-mind critics. I'm a bit skeptical of the effectiveness of this concept. I also think that it is hard to apply in fixed structures or matrix style evaluations. Last semester I was tasked with creating an inspiration/goals board and I really struggled with it. For me personally, I don't find quotes inspiring to do more. Now that I typed that out, it sounds super negative! Not my intention. However, I was raised in a home where failure was not an option, but if you did fail, you kept trying until you succeeded and that was the fuel you needed to keep going. I am also a very goal oriented person. With that mindset, i feel that it probably sets limitations. I have a goal in mind, I work tow...

Weird But Effective Introduction For Sarah

Image
I will admit I'm not very witty when it comes to creating titles for things. So I thought I'd Google ideas to be creative with my phrasing of the word introduction. The first thing that came up was a list of 74 catchy blog titles that will grab people's attention. A list of fill in the blank titles. After trying to add "introduction" to each of the titles, the one I settled on made me giggle the most: Weird But Effective Introduction For Sarah. If you want to see the list for yourself, you can follow this link:  Funny Blog Titles . As the title suggests, my name is Sarah. I'm double majoring in accounting and MIS and I plan to apply for the accelerated master program at the end of the semester and start working towards my masters in MIT. However, I may just settle for one bachelors and be done with it! I have been going to school for the better part of a decade now and have changed majors so many times I've lost track. I am married and have children. M...
