Week 15 Story: The Tourist

Image
As the sun rose over the horizon, Sarah closed her eyes and drew in a deep breath. She had been up for hours, anxious for the day to start. She filled her lungs with the cool, crisp November air. She had finally found the peace she was looking for. Just out of a nasty divorce, she had decided to take a trip to clear her head. For years she had begged her husband to take her to Italy. It was her dream vacation and where her family roots had started out. But no amount of pleading had ever allowed her to take the trip. Anytime they travelled it was to a beach somewhere. Always a beach. For her 34 th birthday, she was going to travel around the world and see all of the beautiful places she had dreamed about. The cool blue waters of the Trevi fountain. The crumbling ruins of the Coliseum where so much history was made that you could almost hear the roar of the crowd in the ghosts that still lived there. She wanted to take the cheesy picture “holding up” the Leaning Tower of Pisa....

Week 14 Story: The Handsome Stranger

Image
It was Friday night and Ellie didn’t feel up to going out. He friends begged and pleaded with her to go with them. It was their routine to go out every Friday night and cruise the bars, hoping to pick up the boy crush. Ellie felt tired and withdrawn today. How many nights could so go out in a tiny dress, flirt with a stranger, and hope that this would be the one? She knew this wouldn’t be the way to meet prince charming, but she obliged her friends anyway. They arrived at their destination and it was packed. They had to maneuver their way up to the bar to order drinks. There was barely enough room to stand, let along breathe. Ellie had all but resolved herself for a long night when she saw him from across the bar. He was startling. His hair the color of honeyed whiskey, his eyes crystal blue and his smile shone as bright as the sun. For a brief moment, all the sounds around her stopped and all she could hear was her shallow breathing and her heart beating out a staccato rhyth...

Week 13 Story: One True Love

Image
She lay wide awake, staring at the ceiling in frustration. The rough sheets scraped across her skin, just barely hiding the fact her mattress was made of straw. The cool night air felt crisp against her exposed skin. The nightgown she wore was tattered and old. The promise of fall lingered in the air and she could almost feel the leaves changing. She should be thankful the heat had finally broke, but she couldn’t quiet her thoughts long enough to notice the change. Sleep escaped her that night. High up in the servant’s tower, it was all she could to but replay the last twelve hours of her life. Over and over and over again. “Constance! Why don’t you ever listen to me? This is not open for discussion!” “But mother, I don’t understand WHY you won’t let me marry him” “Just trust me in this. You cannot and will not marry Elias Fletcher!” “That is not good enough! You have always said that when my love knows no boundaries and my heart is overfilled with joy, this, thi...

Week 12 Story: A Single Soul

Image
** I have also put this story on my Portfolio Page, found  here . The night air crackled with the heat. The coolness of the water clashed with the air and an eerie fog danced across the surface of the lake. Despite low visibility near the ground, the night sky shone bright. The moon bathed each surface in a pale-yellow glow. Every star painted the heavens with a brilliance that made her mind at peace, even if for just a brief second. This was her favorite time of the morning, when the earth was at it quietest. Adeline sat atop the banyan tree overlooking the lake. A heavy sigh escaped her lips. As the quiet crept in, her mind began to wander. She struggled to come to terms with her choices. Leaving her home in the city was necessary, but she was so lonely. The kind of lonely that made her chest ache in a way that made the hopelessness seem vast and never ending. She wondered if she would ever become numb to that feeling. She wondered if she would ever find happiness again. ...

Week 7 Story: Peace in the Flames

Image
Edit: I have added this story to my portfolio. If you'd like to look at it in a different format, follow this  Link ! The moon sat high in the sky. I remember how it bathed the muddy streets in an eerie pale-yellow hue. It’s finger like rays crept into the windows of the houses that dared to leave the shutters ajar. The howling of the wind sent a shiver down my spine. A chill settled deep in my bones and I couldn’t shake the feeling we were being watched. Sleep escaped me that night. I had been on edge for weeks. Waiting. Watching. It was not safe to stay in one place and I felt we had worn out our welcome here. It was time to move on and find another safe haven. Nazi controlled Germany had invaded Poland and forced us to seek refuge at the House of Varanavata. Its walls were vast and the space inside seemed endless. It was furnished with the finest items money could buy. Under any other circumstance, we would have been welcome guests. We would have lavished in the wealth...

Week 6 Story: Lost in Space

Image
I published this story on my Google Sites. It can be found here! The year was 2200 and the world was a different place. Earth had achieved some wonderful things. Space travel for recreational purposes. Self-driving cars that decreased the number of accidents drastically. Robots were highly efficient and intelligent. The healthcare system found cures for almost everything imaginable. But at a cost to the planet. There were so many people that the government had to institute a very strict population control measure. Citizens had to apply to become parents. Only those of top physical and mental health were allowed to raise a child. And even then, only one per family. The earth sent ships into outer space to orbit the earth a year at a time. This allowed for more room on the planet. There were dozens of them. Kunti lived aboard the Durvasas station. She was the young and beautiful wife of the commander, Pandu. They had applied for parenthood and were granted permission to carry a c...

Week 2 Story: Hot Pursuit

Image
I have added this story to my Portfolio page for the class project. The story is the same, but the Author's note has been changed. If you'd like to see the changes, you can follow this  link. It was a crisp fall night and Officer Jack Rabbit was five hours into his ten-hour shift. No amount of coffee seemed to clear the fog that settled in his brain. POP! POP! POP! Gunshots rang through the air and that’s all it took for Officer Rabbit to spring into action. He quickly rounded the corner and saw a small gold sedan take off. This was his big moment, he thought to himself! He was going to catch the shooter and prove to his partners he wasn’t just a rookie anymore. He lights them up and the vehicle takes off. Officer Rabbit calls on the air for backup and the chase is on! They travel down Lake Hefner Parkway; their speeds increasing to 70mph. Soon Officer Bambi and Sargent Dumbo fall in line as secondary and paralleling units. As they continue South, spee...
