Week 14 Story: The Handsome Stranger

It was Friday night and Ellie didn’t feel up to going out. He friends begged and pleaded with her to go with them. It was their routine to go out every Friday night and cruise the bars, hoping to pick up the boy crush. Ellie felt tired and withdrawn today. How many nights could so go out in a tiny dress, flirt with a stranger, and hope that this would be the one? She knew this wouldn’t be the way to meet prince charming, but she obliged her friends anyway.

They arrived at their destination and it was packed. They had to maneuver their way up to the bar to order drinks. There was barely enough room to stand, let along breathe. Ellie had all but resolved herself for a long night when she saw him from across the bar.

He was startling. His hair the color of honeyed whiskey, his eyes crystal blue and his smile shone as bright as the sun. For a brief moment, all the sounds around her stopped and all she could hear was her shallow breathing and her heart beating out a staccato rhythm.

He was surrounded by a group of guys; she could only assume they were his friends. She tried not to be obvious, but she couldn’t help but stare. She was drawn to him. That’s when he looked over and they locked eyes. His smile widened and Ellie’s heart melted. She wanted to meet this devilish stranger.

As the night grew into the early morning hours, Ellie and this stranger were inseparable. They danced, they drank, they laughed. The electricity between them was noticeable to everyone in the room.

The magic continued as they spent the night in Ellie’s bed. She hadn’t felt this free and this happy in a long time. When the sun was breaking the crest of the Earth’s curve, she finally drifted off to sleep with a smile on her face. She had found someone that made her heart soar!

A few hours later, her alarm went off, waking her from her dreams of a fantasy life. She smiled and stretched and basked in the glorious rays of the sun shining through the window.

Last night’s activities came rushing back to her all at once and she couldn’t believe her luck. Here she was with a handsome man, in her bed, who had everything going for him. But before she opened her eyes, she felt his absence. The pillow next to her had a divot in it but was ice cold. How long had he been gone?

She got up and began her morning routine. Maybe he got called out to work? Or maybe he had plans that morning that she was unaware of? As many thoughts passed through her mind, she quickly batted them away. After the night they had, she was sure she would see him again.

And then the morning became days and the days became weeks. She hadn’t heard from him and now she was hurt. She thought what they had shared and how they had connected was something special. She thought he had felt it too.

Ellie became sad and withdrawn even more than her normal self. She refused to go out to the bars with her friends on Fridays and instead, elected to stay at home with her pug. She couldn’t risk getting hurt again.

After moping for nearly six months, Ellie’s friends finally convinced her that she needed to get out. If not for herself, then for them. Her best friend from college, Beth, was going to be in town and wanted to go out. Ellie halfheartedly put up a fight, but ultimately agreed to go. Her friend, sensing her hesitation, asked why she was so reserved. Ellie poured her heart out and told her the story of the handsome stranger.

Jake was out with his friends that night. He was used to his usual prowl of the bar. Looking for the hottest chick to take home that night. He had no interest in a relationship. He just wanted to have some fun. He was young, good looking, successful and best of all….single. He wanted to keep it that way.

On this particular Friday, he had craving for a brunette. He had spotted one out on the dance floor that he just couldn’t keep his eyes off. The blonde that was with her looked familiar, but maybe he had just seen her around. This was their favorite bar to frequent.

He had heard her friends call her Beth. He knew he had to have her. No matter what it took, Beth would be his. He had been watching her and knew that she was drinking a vodka tonic with a lime, no ice. He ordered her drink and worked his way out onto the dance floor. He offered her his winning smile and he knew she was hooked.

They danced for what seemed like hours and she finally moved in close enough that he could smell her perfume. It was soft and delicate and made him hungry for more. She whispered in his early to follow her to the back where the bathrooms where. He was excited and knew he was going to be in for a good time.

When they were in the women’s bathroom she checked the stalls and locked the door behind them. She ordered him to strip down and then go into the large stall and wait for her. He obeyed her orders happily and couldn’t get his buckle undone fast enough. He left his clothes in a pile near the sink and rushed into the stall. He heard her giggle and thought she was just as excited as he was. And then the wait became too long. He peaked his head out to realize she had left, with his clothes!!!!!

Beth and Ellie rushed out the bar, arm full of men’s clothing, laughing so hard their sides hurt. Ellie’s smile was a welcome change to the somber disposition she had had the last several months. Her friend had truly cared about her happiness and thought a little gave of revenge just might be what she needed to cheer her up. Jake would think twice before he took a girl home and never called her.

Author’s Note:
The story I based this off was The Giant Crab. Which can be found here. The crab lived in a body of water and when other animals came to drink, he killed them. The great elephant decided that he had had enough of the crab killing all the creatures around and decided to seek revenge. With the help of his wife, he lured the crab out and when he was out of the water trying to kill his wife, the great elephant killed the crab.
As you can see, no one in my story died. However, I did think it fitting that the bit shot male that takes a woman home and doesn’t call her again was the perfect, modern version of this story.

  1. Hi Sarah! I really loved getting to read this story this week. I loved reading stories like the Giant Crab. I think they are fun to recreate and make your own. I think Jakata tales are my favorite stories to read from this class. I think you did a great job recreating the Giant Crab because it was easy to read and very entertaining. Overall, great job!

  2. Hey Sarah,

I really enjoyed reading your rendition of "The Giant Crab." I also wrote a story earlier in the semester influenced by the Jataka. I like how you gave the characters actual human names, which give a personable touch that allows readers to connect with the story at hand better. I appreciate how none of the characters died in your rendition, because I feel like the death of the crab was unnecessary also when I initially read the Jataka.

  3. Hello Sarah,
I loved reading this story! I thought the changes you made from the original were very nifty. I loved the original, but I think I liked your version much more! The Jataka tales had to be one of my favorite things from this class. Each had their own morale that you would work out by the end of the story.
