Extra Credit Reading: Epified: Krishna Part A

For this assignment, I watched Epified: Krishna: Part A videos.
In Episode 1, it explains the birth of Krisha and how be came about. There was a terrible king who ruled the kingdom and the people longed for change. The king’s cousin got married and there was a prophecy that their 8th child would save the king from the death that was to happen to him. He was going to kill his cousin and his wife, but instead threw them in prison. Every time they had a child, he killed it. When the 7th child was in the womb of the cousin’s wife, it was transported to the womb of another woman. Everyone thought that the cousin’s wife had had a miscarriage. The divine birth of the 8th child is where this video ends. I would have to do more research on this one, but this could be told in China where they have a limit on how many children they can have. This might be able to be translated to that?

Episode 2 starts out with the father of the 8th child holding him and afraid for what might happen to them. Then he tries the door to the prison cell and finds that it is open. A voice inside him told him it was ok to go outside and that everything was going to be okay. He then came across a river and was scared because he didn’t know how he was going to cross it. The gods told him to surrender himself to the river known as Yamuna and that she would protect him. When he did, a serpent came out of the water and protected Vasudev and his son from the raging waters. When he crossed the river, he found a village of gypsies and they were the people of the cow herd. He exchanged his son for Maya the daughter of one of the villagers. He left him here so that no harm would come to him.

In Episode 3, the kind wakes up from a nightmare. The gods had told him that the 8th child had been born. He was anxious to see what this child would look like and if this was going to be the last day of his life. When he went to the cell and found that the child was a girl, he laughed. He didn’t think it possible to be killed by a woman. When he tried to kill this child, light blinded him and he dropped the child. The child turned into a powerful being, Durga. The powerful being told him that he was a fool and that the prophecy of his death was still intact.

Episode 4 starts out with the cow herd woman who’s baby had been exchanged. She was very confused because she remembered having a girl. She had also learned that the mad king had killed hundreds of babies because he was afraid that one of them was going to kill him. She was afraid for her sons. Many people from all over came to see her child, Krishna. They all loved him. Then a woman named Putana came to visit them and the two boys took to her. She became friends with the family. Putana changed form into a demon. She stole Krishna and was going to kill him with poison milk. When Krishna started to drink her milk, he was also feeding on her strength and powers. This killed Putana. This was a demon sent by the evil king to kill the child.

Episode 5 starts out with a cart rolling towards the children. When the mother got there, she saw the cart had been smashed to pieces. The other children told her the Krishna is the one who had smashed it. Krishna gained a reputation as a troublemaker. Krishna became famous as the boy who stole butter or the Maakhan Chor. Krishna’s mother always stood up for him when the people of the town accused him of stealing. But after they left, she always asked him if he had done the things they were saying.

Episode 5 ended when Krishna’s brother told their mother that Krishna was eating mud. Episode 6 picks up where that left off. When his mother asked him to open his mouth, she saw the universe inside him. This overwhelmed her. She then realized, Krishna was more than just a child.

All the people of the town Krishna lived in had dreams that they should leave the place and move somewhere else. So they listened to those dreams and settled somewhere else. This also the time that Krishna became interested in music and began playing the flute. One day, while playing the flute, he found his friends dead next to the lake. The poison that was in the lake had killed them. Krishna played his flute and scared away the evil snake that lived in the lake. The townspeople watched in awe and knew that Krishna was more than a child.

This episode tells of stories of how things have tried to kill Krishna and failed. The first was a demon in the form of a whirlwind. The next was a crane that attacked the village. These were all sent by Kuntz. Even though they were sent, Krishna defeated them all. However, he had a lot to learn to defeat the king.

Krishna convinced the villagers to worship the hill instead of Indra and make all their sacrifices to the hill. Indra became angry and sent a storm to destroy the village. Krishna lifted the hill and sheltered the people from Indra’s storm. Indra them begged for Krishna’s forgiveness.
This episode explains that when Krishna played the flute, all the girls would stop what they were doing and dance to the tunes that he played. Krishna wanted only one, Radha. The two were so in love that their souls were one. When something happened to one, it also happened to the other. This sounds like the plot of a cheesy 90s rom-com. Definitely something that I could work with here.
